Working With Graphics

If you are working with graphics or images of any kind, you’ve probably heard the term “Jpeg” – a common format for compressing image files. Maybe you’re even familiar with “Png” files. Wherever you’re at, it can sometimes be difficult to articulate what those terms mean and when to use the specified formats. Here is a very brief guide to help:

PNG stands for “Portable Network Graphics”

A PNG maintains a transparent background, which is nice when you want to avoid having a white box around your logo in a document. PNGs, however, are not suitable for print on their own. Below is a PNG of LCC’s Wordmark. The checkered background indicates that the background of the image is transparent, so when you bring the image into your web page or document, you won’t see the grid.

Jpeg stands for “Joint Photographic Experts Group”

A JPEG is suitable for use in Microsoft Office documents, projects on the web, as well as projects requiring printing at a high resolution. Be careful when scaling a JPEG significantly in a document, as it can reduce the image quality and produce a “grainy” image.
