Founded in 1976
OUR PURPOSE

The primary goal was initially to provide pastors for churches of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) in Canada. The Canadian districts realized that their students needed to be trained for the ministry in Canada if they were to be likely to stay and serve here. The Canadian context also called for unique formation. The seminary was located on a university campus to provide a pre-seminary route, and near the US border to allow LCMS candidates in the Eastern US to study here and perhaps choose to serve in Canada. In 1989, the LCMS donated the seminary to the newly-formed daughter church (LCC) whom CLTS still serves today.

WHAT WE DO

Forming pastors to serve LCC continues to be the seminary’s primary goal. The Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree is the primary qualification given, but mature students lacking a university degree may also prepare for ordination through the Diploma route. Because of Canada’s uniquely multi-cultural make-up and openness to the world stage, CLTS has also served as a seminary for sister churches in confessional Lutheranism around the world. Since 1987 CLTS has broadened its appeal to lay students of theology by offering the Master of Theological Studies (MTS) degree. The MTS may be completed entirely by distance education. CLTS has graduated more than 200 pastors and more than 20 laypeople (MTS).

ABOUT US

The seminary is a resource to the synod that goes far beyond its primary goal of forming pastors. The faculty write academic and devotional literature, speak at conferences, preach and preside in congregations, support overseas missions, and serve on boards of synod.

OUR STUDENTS

Prospective students should have a dynamic, vibrant, sincere Lutheran Christian faith, as well as a willingness to learn, grow, and be formed to be servants of Christ and His Church in the office of deacon or pastor.

OUR FACULTY

In addition to ordained pastors serving as our faculty, staff members exercise their skills in business administration, library services, record-keeping, publicity, donations, and coordinating the regular volunteer help we receive from church members. We are deeply thankful to so many volunteers!
