Our Background

Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC) began mission work in Costa Rica in 2005 when Rev. Pedro Quintero of Nicaragua was called to serve the growing number of Nicaraguans living in the Heredia region.

After serving several years in this area, Rev. Quintero was called back to Nicaragua and was succeeded by Rev. Edmundo Retana, a native Costa Rican who was ordained and called to Costa Rica in May 2009.

Assisted by his wife, Deaconess Betty Solorzano Retana, Rev. Retana began work in Cartago and established a congregation in the neighbourhood of Manual de Jesus Jimenez, a very humble community in the south side of the city.

Over the years, the mission has expanded to other communities in Cartago and in 2019 received registered legal status with the government as an official church body, becoming the The Confessional Lutheran Church of Costa Rica.
