The Love of Christ in Action

The Deaconesses of Cambodia

“Let your light so shine before others, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

The love of Christ is not only proclaimed with words but demonstrated through works of mercy, kindness, and sacrificial service. The deaconesses of the Cambodia Lutheran Church (CLC) embody this truth, dedicating their lives to serving their communities with compassionate care and faithful catechesis. In a land where the Gospel is still taking root, these women shine the light of Christ through both their words and their works, revealing His love in the simplest yet most profound ways. Their vocation is a life of service reflecting the love and mercy of Christ to those in need.

Christ’s Mercy in the Home and Community

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).

The deaconesses are the hands and feet of Jesus to the sick, the elderly, and the struggling in their communities. They walk through villages and homes, praying with those who suffer, offering words of comfort, and meeting practical needs. A meal shared with a widow, medicine brought to a sick child, clothes given to a family in need—these simple works of mercy are not just social kindness; they are living testimonies of Christ’s love.

Each visit is an opportunity to share the Gospel, to remind the broken-hearted that they are not forgotten. They are seen. They are loved. They are redeemed by the Saviour who bore their burdens on the cross. When a deaconess kneels beside an elderly woman to pray, she invokes the loving presence of Christ into that home. When she listens to the grief of a mother who has lost a child, she embodies the compassion of the Lord who wept at the tomb of Lazarus.

Through the support of Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC), these deaconesses receive the theological training, spiritual guidance, and financial resources they need to carry out their calling and provide for both the spiritual and physical needs of their communities. Their service reflects the mercy of Christ, drawing hearts to the One who provides eternal healing and rest.

Christ’s Truth in the Lives of Women and Children

“Teach them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).

While works of mercy reveal the heart of Christ, His truth is revealed in His Word. The deaconesses in Cambodia are not only caregivers; they are catechists, faithfully teaching the faith to women and children. In homes, churches, and village gatherings, they open the Scriptures, telling the story of salvation to young and old alike.

Women in Cambodia often bear the weight of family and community responsibilities, yet many have never been given the opportunity to study God’s Word. The deaconesses change that by leading Bible studies, encouraging discipleship, and helping women see their identity as daughters of God. When a woman learns that she is precious in the eyes of her Saviour, it transforms her life, giving her renewed meaning and purpose, revealing to her that she is a redeemed child of God.

For the children, Sunday School is more than just learning Bible stories—it is a foundation for faith. The deaconesses adapt lessons to the Cambodian context, using pictures, songs, and interactive teaching to help children understand the Life-giving Gospel more clearly. With each lesson, these little ones come to know Jesus as their Saviour, their Shepherd, and their Friend.

Through the resources and theological training provided by LCC, the deaconesses are equipped to teach faithfully, ensuring that the next generation grows up grounded in the truth of Christ. In a land where false beliefs and spiritual darkness still hold many captive, these women bring the light of God’s Word to women and children, guiding souls into the knowledge of salvation.

  Christ’s Church Strengthened Through Service

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (Colossians 3:23).

The work of the deaconesses does not stand alone—it strengthens the entire body of Christ. By assisting pastors in “serving tables” (Acts 6:2) they free them to focus on preaching, teaching, and administering the Sacraments. Whether organizing church events, assisting with administration, teaching at the Lutheran Schools, or offering diaconal care, their service builds up the Church, making it a place of refuge and renewal.

The deaconesses in Cambodia are a testimony to what happens when Christ’s love is lived out in word and deed. Through works of mercy and faithful catechesis, they are shaping lives, strengthening the Church, and bringing the Light of Christ into homes and communities. LCC’s ongoing support ensures that these women have the training, encouragement, and financial stability to continue this faithful service.

A Call to Pray and Support

Their work is not easy. They need our prayers. They need our encouragement. And they need ongoing support. As we give thanks for their service, may we also be moved to support them in any way we can—through prayer, through giving, and through promoting their service to the Church.

May the Lord bless these faithful women, sustain them in their calling, and use their service to reveal the love of Christ and bring many to the saving knowledge of His Gospel.

“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3:17).
