Strengthening the Church in Cambodia
Faithful Theological Education for a Growing Church
Christ’s Church is built upon the foundation of His Word, faithfully preached and rightly taught. As the Gospel takes root in Cambodia, the Cambodia Lutheran Church (CLC) continues to grow, bearing witness to the power of God’s Word. Central to this mission is the formation of faithful pastors, deaconesses, and church leaders who serve God’s people with the life-giving Gospel and the love of Christ Jesus. Through the gift of theological education, the CLC is equipping its servants with a deep understanding of Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions, ensuring that the next generation of church leaders remains steadfast in the truth of Christ.
Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC), as a trusted partner in this mission, plays a crucial role in providing theological training in Cambodia. Through structured, formal instruction, church workers and candidates immerse themselves in the study of God’s Word, Lutheran doctrine, and the practice of pastoral care. These studies help to better equip and shape men for the pastoral ministry so that they may faithfully proclaim Christ crucified, administer the Sacraments rightly, and guide Christ’s flock with pastoral care. Visiting instructors and mentors from LCC and other confessional Lutheran churches ensure that these candidates receive strong theological formation and the encouragement needed for a lifetime of faithful service.

In addition to pastoral training, the formation of deaconesses and diaconal candidates remains an integral part of strengthening the Church in Cambodia. LCC actively supports the education and training of women who are called to works of mercy and service within the Church. Through dedicated theological instruction, these candidates grow in their understanding of Scripture, Lutheran doctrine, and the practical aspects of diaconal care. Deaconesses play a vital role in congregational life, teaching the faith to women and children, caring for the sick and vulnerable, and assisting in the mission of the Church. Their formation ensures that they serve with theological depth, faithfulness, and a heart devoted to Christ’s mercy. Regular training sessions, mentorship, and conferences supported by LCC provide ongoing encouragement and refinement of their diaconal skills, ensuring that they are well-prepared to meet the spiritual and physical needs of those they serve.
The CLC remains deeply committed to ongoing education for its pastors, deaconesses, and lay leaders. Recognizing the necessity of continual growth in faith and knowledge, the church hosts regular theological seminars, pastoral and diaconal conferences, and continuing education programs, with support from LCC. These opportunities provide deeper theological awareness, refine pastoral and diaconal skills, and embolden church leaders to stand firm in the faith in a country where Christianity remains a minority. Whether through in-person instruction, online learning, or intensive study seminars, these efforts ensure that CLC leaders remain firmly rooted in the truth of God’s Word and ready to face the challenges of ministry with boldness and faithfulness.
The fruit of this theological education is already being seen across Cambodia. New pastors are being ordained and sent to serve congregations, bringing Word and Sacrament ministry to growing communities hungering for the Gospel. Deaconesses are engaged in works of mercy, serving the vulnerable with Christ’s compassion, teaching Scripture to women and children, and strengthening the bonds of Christian fellowship. Lay leaders, equipped with a stronger foundation in the faith, are supporting the ministry of the Church in their local towns and villages, bearing witness to Christ in their vocations. At every level, the Church is being strengthened because its leaders are being formed in the pure doctrine of God’s Word.

As we look ahead, we give thanks for those whom the Lord is calling to serve in Cambodia. We pray that He will continue to bless these efforts, raising up new workers for His harvest (Matthew 9:37-38) and fortifying His Church through His life-giving Word. May the Gospel continue to flourish in Cambodia, and may those who are called to teach, preach, and serve remain steadfast in the faith, equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17). To God alone be the glory, as His Word goes forth, accomplishing all that He purposes (Isaiah 55:11).
