The mission of the Lutheran Church in Nicaragua is a testament to God’s providence and the power of the Gospel to transform lives. This work began in 1997 when Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC) received an invitation to bring the good news of Christ to this Central American nation. The Lord had already prepared a faithful servant for this mission: Rev. Sandor Arguello, a Nicaraguan refugee who had fled to Canada during the civil war. Having been trained and ordained as a Lutheran pastor after graduating from Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary (CLTS) in St. Catharines, Ontario, Rev. Arguello returned to his homeland, as a Called Missionary of LCC, to proclaim the Gospel and plant the Church in Nicaragua.

In 1998, shortly after the mission began, Hurricane Mitch devastated Nicaragua, leaving destruction, hunger, and suffering in its wake. In the midst of this disaster, the small Lutheran mission church stood as a beacon of hope, responding with Christian mercy—offering food, water, medical supplies, and comfort to those in need. As they received this care, many Nicaraguans desired to know more about the faith that motivated such love and compassion. This opened the door for Rev. Arguello to share the pure Gospel of Christ. Through the faithful proclamation of the Gospel, people came to faith, and the Lutheran mission grew, spreading to other parts of the country.

As the young church expanded, the need for trained pastors, deaconesses, and missionaries became urgent. In response, LCC helped establish a seminary and mission centre in Chinandega, ensuring that those called to serve would receive solid theological education. In 2002, the seminary’s first graduating class included 13 pastors, two deacons, and 17 deaconesses, marking a significant milestone in the mission’s growth.

By January 2008, the mission had matured into an independent Lutheran church body, officially forming the Iglesia Luterana Sinodo de Nicaragua (ILSN). LCC continues to support its daughter church by providing ongoing theological education, overseeing the seminary in Chinandega, and assisting in works of mercy—including the Children’s Feeding and Christian Education programs, which provide both physical nourishment and spiritual instruction to countless children across the country. Additionally, LCC aids ILSN in outreach and mission efforts, helping to strengthen and expand the proclamation of the Gospel throughout Nicaragua.

What began as a small mission, has now grown into a thriving church body with pastors, deaconesses, teachers, and congregations sharing Christ’s saving message. The Lord has richly blessed this mission, and through the continued partnership between LCC and ILSN, the Gospel will continue to go forth, bringing hope and salvation to many more in Nicaragua. In eight ILSN congregations, the Pan de Vida (Bread of Life) Feeding Program provides healthy meals to children in need several times a week.

More than that, the program delivers the life-sustaining Bread of Life—Jesus Christ and His Gospel alongside physical nourishment, providing spiritual food that endures to eternal life (John 6:27).
