Thailand Concordia Lutheran Church

Background

Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC) has been blessed to participate in the spread of the Gospel in Thailand, working alongside our sister church, Thailand Concordia Lutheran Church (TCLC). The mission in Thailand is a testament to God’s faithfulness in preserving and expanding His Church in a land where Christianity remains a minority faith. Rooted in confessional Lutheran theology and ministry, this mission has focused on training faithful pastors, establishing and supporting congregations, and engaging in works of mercy.

The Beginnings: A Layman’s Vision for Confessional Lutheranism

The origins of LCC’s involvement in Thailand trace back to the efforts of Dr. Herb Gernand, a dedicated Lutheran layman who moved to southern Thailand for work. Recognizing the need for a confessional Lutheran presence in the country, Dr. Gernand established home churches and sought assistance from LCC to provide pastoral training and support. This led to a formal partnership in 1989, with Rev. Dr. Leonard Harms, LCC’s Director of International Missions, spearheading the development of a theological curriculum. This initiative laid the foundation for a strong and faithful Lutheran presence in Thailand.

LCC’s Commitment to Theological Education and Church Planting

Understanding that the long-term health of the mission depended on trained clergy, LCC partnered with TCLC to equip pastors and evangelists for ministry. Professors and pastors from LCC volunteered their time to teach courses through the Luther Institute Southeast Asia (LISA) program. Two key pastors who emerged from this training were Rev. Suchart Chujit and Rev. Yoh Srikarkarn, who continue to serve congregations in the south of Thailand today with the support of LCC.

LCC’s commitment extended beyond theological education to the direct support of pastoral ministry and church planting efforts. In 2011, LCC and TCLC solidified their partnership through an Agreement of Relationship, reaffirming LCC’s role in training church workers, supporting mission work, and assisting TCLC in outreach efforts.

Reaching the Unreached: The Mission Among the Shan People

One of the most remarkable recent developments has been the mission work among the Shan people in northern Thailand. This ethnic group, many of whom migrated from Myanmar, has historically had little exposure to the Gospel. Recognizing this opportunity, TCLC, with support from LCC, launched a dedicated outreach initiative led by Rev. Niran Temsakun and his evangelism team. Through personal connections, catechesis, and pastoral care, the team has faithfully brought the Gospel to the Shan people.

The Small Catechism has played a crucial role in this mission, helping new converts understand the foundational truths of the Christian faith. Among those deeply impacted by the mission is a young man named Rapeepan, who has now enrolled in the Luther Institute-Thailand for formal theological training. His journey highlights the transformative nature of the Gospel, as those who receive it are equipped to share it with others.

Works of Mercy: Sharing the Love of Christ

LCC’s mission in Thailand is not limited to spiritual care but extends to works of mercy that demonstrate Christ’s love in tangible ways. In the aftermath of the devastating 2004 tsunami, LCC provided long-term educational support for 15 orphaned children. Over the years, LCC has also provided emergency aid relief, funding for humanitarian projects, and support for vulnerable communities.

TCLC’s 20th Anniversary: A Testament to God’s Faithfulness

In 2023, TCLC celebrated its 20th anniversary with a series of conferences held in Bangkok, Phang-Gha, and Chiang Mai. The event brought together representatives from LCC and other partner churches, reflecting on the mission’s history and looking forward to the future. Bishop Ted NaThalang, a convert from the southern region and an instrumental figure in uniting Lutheran congregations in Thailand, expressed his gratitude for LCC’s unwavering support. The celebration was a reminder of how God has used the partnership between LCC and TCLC to advance His kingdom in Thailand.

Looking to the Future: Strengthening the Mission

As TCLC and LCC continue their partnership in the Gospel, the focus remains on faithful theological training, church planting, and outreach to new communities. With the ongoing challenges of ministering in a predominantly Buddhist society, the need for confessional Lutheran witness is as critical as ever. By God’s grace, the next decades of mission work in Thailand will be as fruitful as the past.

The history of Lutheran Church–Canada’s mission in Thailand is a story of faith, perseverance, and God’s providence. From a layman’s vision to an established church body, the mission has flourished through theological education, pastoral ministry, and works of mercy. As we look ahead, we pray that the Lord will continue to bless this work, bringing many more to the saving knowledge of Christ Jesus.

Shining Christ’s Light in Southern Thailand

Pastor speaking to a group of people. While the country as a whole is predominantly Buddhist, the southern region includes not only strong Buddhist communities but also a significant Muslim population. Christian witness is rare, and in some places, viewed with suspicion.

In such a context, Rev. Suchart Chujit’s work is deeply relational, built on trust, compassion, and patient instruction in the Word. He ministers not with loud fanfare, but with quiet perseverance, bringing the Good Shepherd’s voice into homes, markets, and small gatherings where the Spirit opens hearts.
