LCC Sister Church

Cambodia Lutheran Church (CLC)

  • 17 Parishes
  • Over 33 Worshipping Communities
  • 34 Pastors
  • 20 Deaconesses

Our Background

Lutheran Church-Canada’s work in Cambodia began in 2007 when Rev. Dr. Leonard Harms, LCC’s regional director for southeast Asia, and Lutheran Institute Southeast Asia (LISA) started theological classes for a group of men and women who wanted to know more about the Lutheran faith. Eventually the 16 ordained pastors and eight commissioned deaconesses formed a Lutheran church body.

In 2017 the Church in Cambodia restructured and reorganized under a new name: Cambodia Lutheran Church (CLC). Its constitution and bylaws were revised and adopted, and CLC is fully registered through the Evangelical Fellowship of Cambodia (EFC) with the Ministry of Cults and Religion, a government umbrella organization responsible for the registration of churches in Cambodia. The church has established 17 Parishes and has more than 33 worshipping communities, served by 34 Pastors and 20 Deaconesses.

LCC has been instrumental in the life of the Cambodia Church, supporting several mission and mercy projects, assisting CLC in organizing and structuring, and providing theological education for Church workers.

Major supported projects include:

  • Stipends for deaconesses and women evangelists
  • Children’s education and feeding programs
  • Theological education seminars for seminarians, pastors and deaconesses
  • Sister-to-sister seminars through the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League of Canada
  • Sewing schools
  • Providing humanitarian aid to widows and orphans

Mission Minute

Lutheran Church–Canada’s Director of Missions, Rev. M.L. Smith visited Rev. Sao Eam and Deaconess Sanean on December 10, 2022 at the house church they serve outside of Prey Veng, Cambodia. Rev. Smith taught Bible stories to some of the women and children of the congregation and, together, they sang hymns.

Rev. M.L. Smith also visited the Lutheran Church and School in Kampot, Cambodia to speak at their annual community Christmas celebration on December 11, 2022. It has become one of the largest outreach events in the region, drawing hundreds of unchurched people in the area!

Rev. Bun Sopheap, President of Cambodia Lutheran Church (CLC) preached a sermon on the true meaning of Christmas and the students and local deaconesses performed skits, dances and sang Christmas hymns at the all day event.
